WPCNR WHITE PLAINS VOICE. From Candyce Corcoran. November 27, 2003:Commentary from Ms. Corcoran, the former County Legislator candidate on the current county budget crisis:
Our elected county officials say they are not the blame for the deficit, and residents must choose between a 28% property tax and a 1% sales tax increase. Simple put, "let's scare the people and tell them, it is not our fault, it is Albany's."
Our officials were elected to solve issues and keep the county financially sound. In today's economic times, we demand a great deal more! Westchester residents are disenchanted with county government. The county believes that our hard earned money is theirs to dole out on their vote-getting projects. Our household incomes are not their bottomless money pit.
Cut back on county spending, before we look to increase taxes and cut out programs. Look at the cost of running the Offices of the County Executive and County Legislature. Over the years, our representatives have voted to generously increase their salaries. Now is the time to take drastic cuts. Why are the Legislators getting paid so much for a part time job? How many of our legislators would seek re-election if there was no remuneration?
Corporations are reducing staff and salaries to help meet their financial deficit. Many whom call Westchester their home are realizing these cuts. Our county government can follow this lead to become more responsible and responsive. Internal cuts can and must be made immediately. Our officials are running a business, our business, and they should start treating it like one.
