County Talks Some More on Taxes Thursday at 4 Posted on Wednesday, December 04 @ 09:23:11 EST by jfbailey

Toast of the Town! WPCNR WESTCHESTER VOICE. From Kelly Jones. December 4, 2002: Surprise! Just when you thought that the feeding circuses were over, the County has scheduled a final(?) public hearing on the budget on Thursday, December 5th at -- of all times -- 4 pm! It will be held at the County Office Bldg in White Plains.

It is not clear what the purpose of this is although there appears to be a legal requirement which escaped everyone's notice until now. It would be important if some of you could make this if only to show the flag and avoid any impression that we're not concerned about this tax increase.

Update

Since my last communication, the Board met to consider restoring money originally eliminated by the County Executive. As expected, they did. About $91 million was added back -- but also added was the 40% sales tax increase even though the prospect for state approval is uncertain.

State Inaction

If the state doesn't approve, we're back to the 28% property tax which no one wants. That would mean the absolute necessity of reducing expenditures. THE BATTLE IS FAR FROM OVER. Remember, the county does not legally have to have a budget until Dec. 27. That is why it would be important to try to come on Thursday.

Yours in the struggle,

Kelly Jones
