King Komments: City Open Space Deteriorates Posted on Thursday, January 30 @ 07:57:23 EST by jfbailey

Toast of the Town! WPCNR'S KING KOMMENTS. By City Councilman William King. January 30, 2003: The Councilman has been keeping an eye on city-owned properties, and notes a disturbing trend, in his opinion, on the status of land owned by the City of White Plains. Here are his comments on selected White Plains lands:

D'Elia

Can we put a sign or something in front of the old railroad viaduct off of Coralyn and maybe another one off of Hewitt by the stub end street off of it (I know the people who live right by there - a small, tasteful sign) indicating that the D'Elia property, or whatever it should be called (how about "the Greenway Woods" until somebody wants to name it something else), is city-owned open space?

Also, there is still some trash, etc. that is piled up (might be from when I piled some up a year or more ago) at the base of the viaduct, which should be picked up by DPW. And a woodchip trail should be put in leading from Coralyn to the north-south path along the east side of the base of the railroad embankment, and then along that path.

Also, the grafitti should be sandblasted off of the concrete of the viaduct. The city should show more of a sense of ownership and pride in this beautiful property.

I think doing this would be a better use of city workers' time than, say, putting up snow fences along Ridgeway Golf Club year after year. I just don't get that one.

Bryant-Mamaroneck

Can there be a gate or some kind of entrance to this? And could the fence along Mamaroneck be fixed where trees have fallen on it? When Joe Davidson was still here, there was a little sign that was put up. But it's confusing to all but the most intrepid exploring types how to get into this park, which shouldn't be.

Gillie Field

When can the rusty old green fence along Mamaroneck be replaced with the better-looking black fencing?

Greenway

1. Clear out the right-of-way of fallen logs from Sam's parking lot north to Bryant and all the way to Dunkin' Donuts.

2. Seek funding for a parallel asphalt bikeway to the wood chip path.

3. Pick up trash along entrance from Gedney Way.

4. Let's finish the Greenway - it's only ½ done.

City Landfill

- Consider converting this to a central park and dispersing the various public works operations to other sites. This is a potentially fantastic park that could have a new decent-sized town pool and large picnic areas. This could be our central park, next to the Greenway.

I'll keep watching for improvements but changes have been very slow.

Councilman William King
