County Buses Into the Breach, Helping Commuters in P.M. Rush Posted on Wednesday, July 21 @ 18:12:41 EDT by jfbailey

Traffic WPCNR TRAFFIC REPORT. From Westchester County Department of Transportation. July 21, 2004: Beginning at 3:45 p.m. the Westchester County Department of Transportation took those Metro-North New Haven line passengers headed towards New York City from various Westchester stations to the Mount Vernon West station (on the Harlem line), County Executive Andy Spano said.

The action to help so-called reverse commuters comes due to service
problems on the Westchester portion of Metro-North’s New Haven line. As of
this time, there has been partial restoration of service for commuters
heading home from New York City.

Westchester DOT will fill in the transit gap for those passengers headed
south, from Port Chester to Mount Vernon East (the stations on the New
Haven Line). Fifty buses have been called into service. As more
information become available, the county will post specifics on its
website: www.westchestergov.com <http://www.westchestergov.com>

During the morning rush hour, the county came to the rescue of about
10,000 commuters, mainly those going towards Manhattan. Buses picked up
commuters at the Westchester New Haven line stations (between Port Chester
and Mount Vernon East) and transported them to the Mount Vernon West
station (which is on the Harlem Line, where service has not been
affected.)

The buses being used are a combination of the county’s Bee-Line buses and
some private buses arranged by the county. Metro-North will reimburse
Westchester County for any expenses incurred.
